The Piggery Project

Terminology

Boar or hog - Male pig of breeding age.

Sow/Swine - Breeding female or female after first or second litter.

Barrow - Male pig castrated before puberty.

Stag - Male pig castrated later in life (an older boar after castration).

Gilt - Young female not yet mated, or not yet farrowed, or after only one litter (Depending on local usage).      

Piglet - Unweaned young pig or any immature pig or newly borne.

Sucker/Creeper - Piglets mostly stay around their parents until they become mature(up to 56 days).                                   
Weaner - Piglets are separated from his mother after 56 days.

Calling Piglets - The Piglets with the lightest and slowest weight gain were selected and  isolated from mother.                           

Orphan piglet - Feeding piglets whose mother does not produce enough milk or dies,  the piglet should give to another sow which farrowed or gave birth.                                           

Runt - The piglet which is smaller or weaker than the other piglets.

Pin teeth - The piglet's teeth should be cut/treamed as soon as possible after its birth within 2-3 days.The piglet is born with 4 teeth.                                             

Castration - Castration, or the removal of the testicles, is carried out on the male pig which is not needed for breeding. Young pigs should be castrated at 2 to 3 weeks of age.                        

Litter size - While many children at once.

Farrowing - The process of giving birth or the production of a litter of pigs.

Bedding - Spreading straw (like, soyabean stalks, small grain straw) out into those areas allows pigs to cool themselves.
